Analysis of VoIP Softphone Performance between Wired and Wireless in Campus Network Environment

This study focuses on softphone evaluation performance for VoIP conversation via wired and wireless technology in campus environment. We have setup a real VoIP network environment in University of Kuala Lumpur (UniKL), Malaysia. Two softphones such as 3CX phone and Mizuphone will undergo evaluation process to define which softphone able to provide better VoIP quality. Implementation of VoIP in campus environment is not considered any QoS features. In our experiments, we use mean opinion score (MOS) to evaluate and measure the performance of VoIP in campus environment. MOS is a human perception based on qualitative technique. We select several students in UniKL to test VoIP performance. We have conducted several experiments such as: i) test the VoIP over medium transmission; and ii) select different codecs: GSM, G.726, iLBC and Speex. The result shows that 3CX phone able to provide a good quality of VoIP over wired and wireless transmission. In addition, using different codecs, it shows a good respondent result on quality of VoIP using 3CX phone. Therefore, we will use 3CX softphone as our medium communication via VoIP technology.

Universiti Malaysia Pahang Moves Forward with Oracle Solutions

UTeM, Cisco develop learning environment

KUALA LUMPUR, 7 MARCH 2011 - Malaysian technical university Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) and networking solutions firm Cisco have rolled out a 20-gigabit-per-second (Gbps) network to create a connected learning environment.

UTeM Computer Centre directors Mohd Isa Mohd Dom said the network in its Durian Tunggal campus, which houses 8,000 students, would simplify operations as well as provide connectivity on any device. "UTeM is the first university in Malaysia to roll out such a robust campus-wide network, which aims to be a model for other universities in the country in the planning and implementation of information and communications technology (ICT)."

"We believe the network is crucial in enabling a future-proof technology environment that contributes to academic excellence, innovation and creative technical education," said Isa. "With a network powered by Cisco equipment, we are ready to welcome into the campus latest technologies such as unified communications, video conferencing facilities and lecture-on-demand applications."

Problematic Software Courts Disaster, Says ICT Expert

BANGI, 21 Feb. 2011 – Software with problems can cause disaster if they are not detected, tested and rectified in a framework of quality certification, says an ICT expert here today.

Prof Dr Aziz Deraman, who is the Vice Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), said softwares, like humans, are always exposed to diseases like heart attack which can be prevented if it is detected early.

He cited the case of the “SCUD vs Patriot” missiles during the Gulf War where 20 American soldiers were killed and 100 others injured when their Patriot guided missile missed hitting the Iraqi’s SCUD missile as an example where software with problems had brought about disasters.

An arithmetic rectification found that the time calculated for the Patriot to hit the SCUD was 0.34 seconds late and that even though corrections had been made earlier, it was not done to all its programming codes, said Prof Dr Aziz when delivering his inaugural professorial lecture titled “In Search for Quality Software”.

In the case of the rocket launcher Ariane 5 disaster in June 1996, the rocket exploded 40 seconds after take-off because the software specifications for Ariane 4 were used for Ariane 5 when the specifications of the two rockets were different.

“Pre-launch tests on the software were not conducted until the actual launch,” said Prof Dr Aziz who had served in UKM in various capacities for 28 years, including as Dean of the Faculty of Information Science and Technology before he was appointed Vice Chancellor of UMT last year.

He said with the ever-growing dependence on software, the challenges for research in search of quality software were to safeguard the harmony between the software and users; to detect software “illnesses” before disasters strike and to face the situation of attempting to measure the unmeasurable.

But the biggest challenge in the search for quality software was to try to measure the software because “we cannot control what we cannot measure”.
 

For this reason, several approaches had been developed to try to measure the quality of software such as quantitative values to explain a certain phenomenon; matrix size of the software which is getting less and less relevant and user evaluation that is directed at only external factors and matrix as a measurement of “quality software”. 
 

Prof Aziz, who had held the post of Deputy Director of the UKM Computer Centre, said the approach they had used to evaluate the software quality of the university’s  Centre for Information Technology was based on “Goal/Question/Matrix” or GQM which is a technique to identify the important matrix in the lifespan of the software. .

This approach could lead to the certification of the software by a third party similar to ISO certification, said Prof Dr Aziz who was born at di Kampong Tok ku, Cabang Tiga Kuala Terengganu in 1959.

He had his primary education at Sekolah Kebangsaan Pusat Cabang Tiga Kuala Terengganu and secondary education at Sekolah Menengah Sains Pahang before doing his matriculation at Sekolah Alam Shah.

He was offered a place to do medicine at UKM but he switched to Computer Science where he graduated with his first degree in 1982. He obtained his Masters from Glasgow University in 1984 and his PhD from UMIST Manchester in 1992.

Apart from his lectures and research works and publications, Prof Aziz is also active with organisations outside the campus where he had served as advisor, panel member and consultant in ICT. He has to date supervised 37 Master students and 20 PhD candidates.




UMS to increase intake of foreign students

KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) has sealed a partnership with Asia e-University (AeU) to further expand its online distance learning (ODL) programmes.
The university inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the new partner yesterday, aiming to increase the intake of its international students by better promoting its Postgraduate Master Programmes through AeU.
Under the agreement, two ODL programmes, namely the Master of Human Capital Management (School of Business and Economics) and Master in Education Management (School of Education and Social Development), will be offered starting January next year.
UMS vice-chancellor Brigadier General Professor Datuk Seri Kamaruzaman Ampon said the MoU paved the way for further collaboration with AeU, especially in promoting ODL programmes to foreign countries.
He added UMS was looking towards offering more programmes from its other schools through AeU in the near future.
“The significance of this MoU would be to encourage the expansion of our online distance learning programme globally in the industry of higher education, with AeU as a gateway university to develop and expand ODL programmes, thus generating impact towards our national economy,” he said.
Kamaruzaman said besides increasing the intake of international students in UMS, the move was also consistent with the national agenda to promote Malaysia as the regional international hub.
“This would be reachable with the MoU with AeU today, where AeU will assist us in promoting the ODL programmes through online portal as well as providing the technical training and expertise in handling the online lectures and learning activities to our academic staff who are involved directly in the ODL programmes,” he added.
AeU is a flexible, international university set up in Asia under the Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD). Its establishment is an initiative of Malaysia as the prime mover for e-education, with the support of 31 ACD member countries.
Headquartered in Kuala Lumpur, AeU collaborates with higher learning institutions and training centres in the 31 ACD member countries to offer academic and professional training programmes focusing on affordability, accessibility, and quality.
The institution has been commissioned by the government to collaborate with higher learning institutions in Malaysia to promote Online Distance Learning (ODL) and under this initiative, every higher learning institution is required to identify and develop two ODL programmes by end of 2011.
The signing was witnessed by State Resource Development and Information Technology Minister Datuk Dr Yee Moh Chai, where Kamaruzaman represented UMS and AeU was represented by its president, Professor Datuk Ansary Ahmed.
Ansary said Malaysia is currently ranked the 10th most popular destination for foreign students in the world, and promoting ODL programmes is another effort to climb up the rank besides increasing the number of foreign students coming and studying in the country.
He said among the regions the country has targeted to reach out to are Asean, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, the Indian sub-continent and Africa.
“Malaysia has a target of reaching 110,000 online students by 2020; we have a big task, this will not be successful if we as institutions and academicians cannot work together,” Ansary added.
UMS is the seventh public higher learning institution (IPTA) which AeU has ventured with in providing Malaysian education online.
Commenting on the signing of the MoU, Dr Yee said it was in line with the country’s effort to better equip itself to meet the challenge in creating proper human resource development through education.

International Conference on IT July 11- UNIMAS

KUCHING: The International Conference on IT in Asia (CITA) is an international forum run by the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas).
The conference aims to bring together professionals and executives to share and exchange ideas and information pertaining to the roles of ICTs within the prevailing challenges of development faced by the region.
This international forum also aims to investigate how the technology can be adapted to improve local needs as well as to bring technology within reach of the communities.
The theme for the 7th CITA will be ‘Emerging Convergences and Singularity of Forms’.
For this year’s event, CITA ’11 Keynote speakers include Prof Bebo White of Stanford Linear Accelerator Centre (SLAC), from renowned Stanford University, USA; Prof Dr Leon Sterling, from Swinburne University of Technology, Australia; and Prof Dr Yoshiyori Urano from Waseda University,
